Looking Beyond What You See: A Note to the Next Generation

A recent conversation converted to blog

As you look ahead, I want to be honest: the world you’re stepping into isn’t simple. In less than a decade, things have become… complicated. Our generation has left you with more problems than we inherited. I’m sorry about that - truly.

But here’s the hopeful part: every mess is an opportunity in disguise.

Anne Lamott once wrote, “Clutter and mess show us that life is being lived. Clutter is wonderfully fertile ground - you can still discover new treasures under all those piles, clean things up, edit things out, fix things, get a grip.” I relate to that deeply - especially when I look at my own shelves.

And that’s our hope for you: that you’ll be the ones who discover treasures in the mess, clean things up, and build something better. History shows us that, the generations that inherited a confused and complex world, did much better than the others.

How Did We Get Here?

There are many reasons, but three stand out.

1. Conflict

Too many wars, often for reasons that don’t hold up - differences in belief, identity, or simply wanting what someone else has. The whole “us vs them” mindset has cost humanity dearly. Your generation has the chance to do things differently. To see one another as human first.

2. Technology

We started strong, then lost the plot a bit. We built tools we don’t fully know how to manage - yes, even the AI tools some of you secretly use for homework.  We have allowed the tools we have developed to destroy opportunities for those who built it! Just look at the job losses in the last few months! You, however, are digital natives. understand this world in ways our generation never will.

3. The Planet

Climate change, carbon emissions, and a staggering imbalance in wealth distribution - these are realities you’re inheriting. The richest 1% holding most of the wealth isn’t just a statistic; it’s a challenge. Love the planet. Love people. That’s where change begins.

Three Pieces of Wisdom (From Disney, Pixar, and Good Book)

1. Look Beyond What You See

Remember Timon, the quirky meerkat? His journey begins when he dares to look beyond what everyone else considers safe. Rafiki nudges him along with the advice: “Look beyond what you see.” Life is more than ticking boxes. Look beyond - so you can help fix what’s broken, not just chase what’s expected.

As the good Book says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” Find your vision. And find your Rafiki - someone who gives you a gentle whack when you lose your way.

2. There Are No Accidents

Kung Fu Panda becomes the Dragon Warrior by accident - or so it seems. Master Oogway insists, “There are no accidents.” You may not end up where you planned. You may not get exactly what you wished for. But there is a larger story unfolding, one that shapes you in ways you can’t yet see. Looking back on our own life, nothing we have done was part of our plans.

Yet none of it was accidental.

3. Purpose Often Arrives Unexpectedly

Think of Mulan. Her purpose emerges from a moment she never anticipated. She steps into danger, disguises herself, and discovers who she truly is. Purpose often comes disguised as inconvenience, challenge, or even crisis.

And along the way, she is given and she holds on to two principles: Strength and Discipline. Not only physical strength, but strength of character. Not academic discipline alone, but the discipline of lifelong learning. Hold these tightly. They will carry you further than talent ever will.

Stepping Into the World

As you step into a world that is big, beautiful, and sometimes baffling, don’t be afraid. Many have walked this path before you, and many will walk after you. Walk in a way that makes it easier for them. And all the things you’re told to worry about - success, security, stability - will come. They’re not the starting point. They’re the by-products.

Seek what truly matters: purpose, goodness, and the flourishing of the world around you. As The Good Book puts it: “Steep your life in God-reality, initiative, and provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find that, all your everyday human concerns will be met.

Have courage. Have faith. And keep looking beyond what you see. You will enjoy - not the future, the present.
